London—PowerChina Resources’ Singapore-based subsidiary is planning to tender for qualified coal suppliers of thermal coal to supply the company’s 51%-owned 1,320 MW Port Qasim coal-fired power plant project in Pakistan, which it expects to start commissioning from September this year.The company is launching this tender, as well as another for qualified international freight shippers to transport coal, on April 10, with the tenders closing April 30. The aim of the tenders is to compile a list of qualified suppliers and international shippers for coal supply and/or transport in the future. The chosen entities will enter into separate contract negotiations in May.
PowerChina Resources said the Port Qasim plant will run on 3,800-5,500 kcal/kg NAR coal from Indonesia, South Africa or Australia to be supplied in shipments no larger than 50,000 mt. It will require 300,000-600,000 mt of thermal coal in 2017 and 2.3 million-4.5 million mt/year from 2018. The Port Qasim power plant will have two 660 MW units and is the first built under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). It is situated in the Port Qasim Industrial Park, 37 km southeast of Karachi and is jointly owned with Al Mirqab Capital. According to the CPEC website, construction on the supercritical plant began in May 2015, with power generation from the first unit scheduled for the end of December this year and the commercial operating date planned for June 2018.
